Dishwashers will usually come with a decibal (dbA) rating. Anything below 46 decibels is generaly considered to be quiet, with some of the quietest models reaching as low as 39 dbA.
New dishwasher models are, on average, much quieter than older models, as manufacturers have innovated new sound-deadening materials. Twenty years ago, the average decibal rating for a dishwasher was 60 dba. Even cost-effective dishwashers can rank in the 40 - 50 dbA range, with higher-end models approaching the high 30s
