An upright freezer stands upright, with a door on the front for easy access of your frozen goods. A chest freezer sits on the ground with a lid on top, requiring that you reach down inside to remove your frozen goods. Though less convenient, chest freezers are more energy efficient, because the cold air is contained when the lid is opened. This is in contrast to the upright freezer, which loses cold air every time the door is open, but provides more ergonomic access through that same door.
