There is no consensus on what type of electric dryer is best, as each type has different benefits depending on the needs of the customer.
- Vented Electric Dryer: most dryers are vented because the technology is inexpensive, and dry times are fast (relative to other electric dryers). They pump in and heat dry air, then expell hot moist air outside through a vent. This process is fast, but energy is lost in the expelled hot air, making it the least energy efficient.
- Electric Dryers with condensers: Sometimes called "ventless", these dryers do not require a vent to run outside, because they "condense" the moisture into a water tank for draining. This process takes longer, extending dry times, but the lack of vent lets you install it nearly anywhere in your home.
- Electric Dryers with heat pumps: Heat pumps are highly efficient, dropping energy costs 50% or more compared to their vented counterparts. The technology is newer, making the up front costs for these dryers higher, but the energy savings long term can easily justify this expense. Like a condenser, they also do not require a vent, and will condense water into a tank for draining or manual exchange. The main difference is that a heat pump utilizes a tight feedback look, reusing hot air to keep energy loss at an absolute minimum. This process takes time however, as heat pump dryers see the longest drying times.
