LG introduced this agitator design in some of their newer top-load washers to address compromises associated with a standard agitator. The shape of the agitator fin adds an up-down motion to the standard left-right spin action during the wash cycle, borrowing some of the advantages of an impeller while maintaining the tougher cleaning action of an agitator (see What is the difference between an agitator and an impeller, and which is better?).
Many customers report that this top-load design strikes a balance between the advantages of a standard agitator and an impeller, providing thorough cleaning without excessive wear and tear on clothes.
