GE invented this feature to address a common setback in front-load washers. Due to the horizontal drum orientation, the front-loading door has to create a water-tight seal when closed. If the door is left shut for many days, moisture is trapped, which can cause mold or mildew to form inside. Traditionally, many users avoided this by simply leaving the door open when not in use, allowing proper air flow. However, GE now offers front-load washers with a vent system installed on the perimeter of the door, which works in tandem with a moisture sensor inside the drum, automatically pumping fresh outside air to properly dry the drum when not in use.
