Free-standing ranges are designed for open placement in the kitchen, without adjacent cabinets or countertops on either side. The controls will usually be in the black, raised above cooking surfaces. Slide-in ranges, by contrast, are optimized for wedging between cabinets, or "sliding in" to a space intended for a range between counter-tops. The controls will generally be at the front, leaving the cooking surface as a flat, continuous surface for a kind of flush look with your counter-top. Drop-in ranges take this concept further, "dropping in" on a specialized toe-kick provided by the Kitchen cabinets, for a fully integrated look.
